Everything You Need to Know Before You Arrive
To ensure a smooth and stress-free arrival in Tanzania, it’s important to understand the entry requirements in advance. This guide outlines the most up-to-date information on visas, passports, vaccinations, customs regulations, and airport arrival tips to help you plan with confidence.
1. Passport Requirements
All visitors must have a valid passport with at least 6 months of validity beyond the planned date of departure from Tanzania.
The passport must have at least one blank visa page for entry stamps.
2. Visa Requirements
Most visitors need a visa to enter Tanzania. You can obtain it in three ways:
A. eVisa (Recommended)
Apply online via the official Tanzania Immigration website: https://eservices.immigration.go.tz/visa
Processing time: approx. 10 business days
Cost: Around $50 USD (subject to nationality)
You will receive a PDF approval to print and present at arrival
B. Visa on Arrival
Available at major entry points, including Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam, Arusha, and Zanzibar airports
Payment must be made in USD cash
Lines can be long—eVisa is preferred
C. Embassy Visa
You can also apply at a Tanzanian Embassy or Consulate before travel, especially if you’re from a visa-restricted country
Note: Citizens of Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and some SADC countries do not need a visa. Check with the Tanzanian Immigration Department or your nearest embassy for your specific nationality.
3. Yellow Fever Certificate
Required only if arriving from or transiting through a Yellow Fever-endemic country, such as Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia, or South America.
Not required if flying directly from Europe, North America, or other non-endemic countries.
Carry your Yellow Fever vaccination card in your hand luggage just in case.
4. COVID-19 Guidelines (Subject to Change)
As of the most recent update:
No PCR test or vaccination proof is required for fully vaccinated travelers.
Health screening on arrival may include temperature checks or health forms.
Travelers with flu-like symptoms may be asked to test at their own cost.
Always check Tanzania Ministry of Health or airline updates before departure.
5. Customs & Entry Declarations
You may bring in personal belongings, cameras, and binoculars duty-free.
Currency over $10,000 USD must be declared.
Importing drones or satellite phones requires advance approval and permits.
Plastic bags are banned in Tanzania. Use reusable cloth bags instead.
6. Entry Points
You can enter Tanzania by air, land, or sea. Popular entry points include:
Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) – for Northern Circuit safaris
Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) – for Dar es Salaam & Southern parks
Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) – for Zanzibar
Land borders: Namanga, Holili, and others connecting to Kenya and Uganda
7. Departure Tax & Exit Process
Most international flights include the departure tax in the ticket price.
At departure, you’ll go through security, immigration, and customs checks.
Be at the airport at least 3 hours before international flights.
8. Travel Insurance
Strongly recommended for all travelers
Should cover medical emergencies, trip cancellations, theft, and evacuations
Proof may be requested upon arrival in some cases
