Understanding Gratuities on Your Safari
Tipping is a customary way to show appreciation for great service during your safari in Tanzania. While it is not mandatory, it is greatly appreciated by those who work hard to make your experience memorable—especially guides, drivers, camp staff, and porters.
This guide offers practical advice on how much to tip, who to tip, and how to handle gratuities with respect and ease.
Why Tipping Matters
Safari teams often work long hours in remote areas to ensure your safety, comfort, and enjoyment. A thoughtful tip is not only a kind gesture but also a meaningful part of their income. Tipping helps support their families and communities.
Who Should You Tip on Safari?
1. Safari Guide / Driver-Guide
Your guide is the heart of your safari—responsible for spotting wildlife, navigating the parks, and sharing knowledge.
- Suggested Tip:
- $10–$20 USD per person per day (or more for exceptional service)
- Tip at the end of your safari in an envelope or directly by hand
2. Lodge & Camp Staff
This includes chefs, housekeeping, waiters, guards, and general support staff.
- Suggested Tip:
- $5–$10 USD per guest per night
Most lodges have a communal tip box—you don’t need to tip each staff member individually
3. Porters & Airport Transfers
For handling luggage or assisting with arrivals and departures.
- Suggested Tip:
- $1–$2 USD per bag for porters
- $5–$10 USD for transfer drivers depending on distance and service
4. Specialists (Balloon Crew, Walking Guides, etc.)
If you take a hot air balloon safari, walking tour, or cultural experience with a local guide, a tip is also appreciated.
- Suggested Tip:
- $10–$20 USD per activity, per guest
Tipping Guidelines Summary (Per Person)
Role | Amount (USD) |
---|---|
Safari Guide | $10–$20 per day |
Lodge/Camp Staff | $5–$10 per night |
Porter | $1–$2 per bag |
Airport Transfer | $5–$10 per transfer |
Balloon or Walking Guide | $10–$20 per activity |
How to Tip
- Use USD or Tanzanian Shillings. US Dollars should be clean, unmarked bills printed after 2009.
- Carry small denominations ($1, $5, $10, $20) for flexibility
- Present tips in an envelope when possible—it’s considered more polite
- In group safaris, guests may pool tips and give collectively
