The Nyerere National Park is the very definition of “African wilderness.” Covering a staggering 21,000 square miles (55,000 square kilometers) and spanning an area larger than Switzerland, the Selous (pronounced “Seloo”) is one of the largest nature reserves in the world.
As a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, the reserve is a place of beauty devoid of any permanent human habitations, except for a limited number of capacity-controlled tourist facilities. With such a pristine wilderness, it is no wonder that rare wild dog and thousands of elephants regularly migrate through the reserve’s rolling grassy woodlands and plains to find relief in the network of lakes and tributaries of the Rufiji River. This massive, teeming wilderness is one not to be missed, especially for travelers who have previously seen the northern parks of Tanzania or Kenya.

Day 3: Nyerere National Park, morning and afternoon safari activities
One of the most exciting opportunities for the more adventurous is a walking safari. The Nyerere national park is one of the few parks in Tanzania where visitors can travel on foot and relive the experience of some of the early explorers. Choose a general wildlife trail or one that is focused on a special interest. Of course, an armed ranger will accompany you at all times. It is the one of the best ways to fully appreciate the landscape and learn about the wildlife from their point of view. In the afternoon, explore the far reaches of the Rufiji River’s many lakes and tributaries on a boat safari. Visit numerous points and look out for the animals that make this river their home. End the day watching a magnificent sunset paint the river in vibrant colors from your floating vantage point.
